At 4:17 AM EST, MetaCity's automated localization patch deployed a string replacement across the live user registry that was intended to correct a single NPC shopkeeper's misspelled name. A scoping error in the patch script caused the replacement logic to propagate to all user-facing name fields across the platform. By 5:00 AM, 6.4 million accounts had been renamed. Variations include Gerald, Gerald2, G_Gerald, GeraldGerald, and, in 847,000 cases, simply gerald in lowercase. The original NPC's name was also not fixed. He still says Gereld.
